Holiday Sugar Detox Energy Balls

Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • 10–12, pitted Medjool dates Natural sweetness, fiber, and caramel-like flavor. Soak if they're dry.
  • 1 cup Rolled oats Structure and slow-release energy. Use certified gluten-free if needed.
  • 1/2 cup Almond butter Creamy binder and healthy fats. Swap with sunflower seed butter for nut-free.
  • 1/3 cup Vanilla protein powder Boosts protein and helps the balls set. Choose unsweetened if you're hardcore detoxing.
  • 1 tbsp Chia seeds Fiber and omega-3s for satiety and texture.
  • 1 tbsp Flaxseed meal Lignans, fiber, and a subtle nutty flavor.
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon Balances sweetness and screams “holiday.”
  • 1/2 tsp Ground ginger Warm spice with digestive benefits.
  • 1/4 tsp Fine sea salt Enhances flavor; don't skip it.
  • 1 tsp Orange zest Bright, festive lift without sugar.
  • 1 tsp Pure vanilla extract Depth and coziness.
  • 1/2 cup, divided Unsweetened shredded coconut Half for the mix, half for rolling.
  • 1/4 cup, optional Dark chocolate chips, 85% cacao Minimal sugar, maximum satisfaction.
  • 1–2 tsp, optional Maple syrup For those transitioning off sweets; totally skip if you want strict detox.
  • 1–3 tbsp as needed Water or unsweetened almond milk To bring the mixture together.

Method

  1. If stiff, soak dates in warm water for 5 minutes, then drain well. Sticky is good; soggy is not.
  2. In a food processor, add oats, protein powder, chia, flax, cinnamon, ginger, salt, and half the coconut. Pulse until sandy.
  3. Toss in orange zest and vanilla. Pulse a couple of times to distribute.
  4. Add dates and almond butter. Process until the mixture starts clumping. If it looks dusty, add 1 tbsp liquid at a time.
  5. Pinch some mixture. If it holds shape without crumbling, you're golden. If crumbly, add another splash of liquid; if sticky, pulse in a tablespoon of oats.
  6. Fold in dark chocolate chips by hand so they don't shatter into dust (unless you like confetti chocolate).
  7. Scoop about 1 tablespoon per ball. Roll between your palms until smooth.
  8. Roll balls in the remaining shredded coconut for snowy holiday vibes, or leave naked—your call.
  9. Chill for 20–30 minutes to firm up. This helps flavors marry and texture tighten.
  10. Enjoy 1–2 as a snack, pre-workout boost, or “please don't grab the sugar cookies” emergency ration.
