Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 4 servings

Ingredients

  • Greens (2 cups per pack): Spinach, kale (stems removed), Swiss chard, or a spring mix. Spinach is the mildest.
  • Frozen fruit (1 to 1½ cups): Mixed berries, mango, pineapple, peaches, or banana slices.
  • Creamy base (choose 1, about ½ cup): Banana slices, avocado chunks, frozen zucchini coins, or cauliflower rice.
  • Flavor boosters (1 to 2 tablespoons): Nut butter, seed butter, cocoa powder, fresh ginger, or cinnamon.
  • Protein (optional, 1 scoop or 2 to 3 tablespoons): Protein powder (whey or plant-based), hemp seeds, chia seeds, or Greek yogurt (add fresh at blending time).
  • Fiber add-ins (1 tablespoon): Ground flaxseed, chia seeds, or oat bran.
  • Liquid for blending (¾ to 1½ cups per smoothie): Water, coconut water, milk, or unsweetened non-dairy milk.
  • Extras (optional): A squeeze of lemon or lime, a dash of vanilla, or a pinch of sea salt.
  • Equipment: Zip-top freezer bags or reusable silicone bags, a blender, measuring cups, and a marker for labeling.

Method

  1. Prep your greens: Wash and dry thoroughly. Remove tough kale stems. Pack about 2 cups of greens per smoothie bag.
  2. Choose your fruit: Use about 1 to 1½ cups total. Try a mix like 1 cup berries + ½ cup mango for brightness without too much sweetness.
  3. Add a creamy element: Include ½ cup sliced banana, avocado chunks, zucchini coins, or cauliflower rice to keep the texture silky.
  4. Boost flavor and nutrition: Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of nut or seed butter, cocoa, ginger, or cinnamon. Sprinkle in 1 tablespoon of flax or chia for fiber.
  5. Add protein (optional): If using protein powder or hemp seeds, add them to the bag now. If using yogurt, add it later when blending.
  6. Pack it up: Place everything into freezer bags. Press out excess air to prevent freezer burn. Flatten for quick freezing and easy storage.
  7. Label clearly: Write the flavor (e.g., “Berry-Kale + Cocoa”), date, and suggested liquid amount (e.g., “1 cup almond milk”).
  8. Freeze: Lay bags flat in a single layer until solid. Then stack vertically like files to save space.
  9. Blend when ready: Dump contents into a blender. Add ¾ to 1½ cups liquid, starting with less. Blend on low, then high until smooth, adding more liquid if needed.
  10. Taste and tweak: If it’s too “green,” add a squeeze of lemon or a few more frozen fruit pieces. If it’s too thick, splash in more liquid.
